The Stanley Cup is a...They are still out are they?

The Stanley Cup is an engraved record book. The best league has control of it.

The way it is now the NHL controls not only the Cup but the highest level of pro hockey. You can not easily start another league to compete, at least not in a year or two.

The NHL has essentially determined they don't want to provide pro-hockey. The revenue they get is outstripped by expenses once all their franchises and associated costs are tallied up. So they are not going to do that unless they can increase all revenues by about 24% immediately or drop expenses in salaries by about 12% immediately. Buried players in the minors would count as well for the first time. The PA doesn't want the pot they eat out of diminished.

What the owners lose sight of is their investment. They are sure, and rightfully, that the players won't start another league. They dismiss the possibility that they will not exist themselves. However it is real. Should the top 100 NHL players head off overseas they can be absorbed by any league willing to expand their rosters. No one is a bad guy. That leaves the NHL with the bottom 600. Some great players right?

So would you pay to watch Darche, Blunden, Prust, Nash, Boullion, and Desjardins as the starting lineup of the Canadiens? When Molsen's sees that viewership of KHL games in their markets is up to 3 million, 5 in the playoffs, will they maintain their stance or hedge their bets and advertize against enchroachment by competitors?

When Crosby goes overseas a large part of the viewership will go to. But if Crosby and the others decide to stay there, lockout or not, we could see the NHL become the AHL. How's that for a return on investment? Bettman will be hockey's Napoleon.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3435571560723564995.post-53115948913892771022012-10-20T02:29:57.576-11:002012-10-20T02:29:57.576-11:00Have been reading your blogs for sometime now.The ...Have been reading your blogs for sometime now.The PLAYERS are the ones being screwed here. The league wants to bring on this global restraint situation to bring the players in line with the early 50's and 60's.Where owners rule their clubs like KINGS in the 14 century. We all remember how star players were used against one another and players salaries were kept secret for the owners financial gain and control.I personally believe that the players should walk away from any settlement till half way next year. The only way they will get their 57%. Of which the league made a fairly good profit.Don 't give into propaganda by the league which sees this as union busting in the extreme. Stay strong and wait the certain bully owners out...(we know who they are) to break their will.In a nut shell this is what is happening.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3435571560723564995.post-27547189322203962702012-10-19T11:11:40.603-11:002012-10-19T11:11:40.603-11:00I think it is a great idea to let women's hock...I think it is a great idea to let women's hockey or any other well-run league compete for the Stanley. Its about the hockey, after all not about the league, and everyone knows the NHL is not about hockey, its about hockey-related revenue.
I've been reading lots and thinking some with all this no hockey time. The players are whiners who would rather complain about the owners than take things into their own hands and start their own league. The owners are just a vanity cartel for whom a hockey team is simply a fiefdom, with minions wearing their crests and regalia. That's the world we live in.
I'd love to see contraction, 24 teams, better hockey, better officiating... but that's not the era we live in.
baruCHnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3435571560723564995.post-8223383305101451062012-10-15T08:06:02.793-11:002012-10-15T08:06:02.793-11:00A bunch of beer-leaguers competing for the Stanley...A bunch of beer-leaguers competing for the Stanley Cup - no thanks.

I watch hockey for the speed, skill, hits, big saves, and intensity. The Stanley Cup playoffs ramp up these characteristics and make the games more exciting, but without top players the games would not be worth watching.

If you want to punish the NHL then you have to hit them in the pocketbook - so spend less on NHL merchandise and watch fewer games.

DBAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3435571560723564995.post-48983528844196372232012-10-13T12:50:25.982-11:002012-10-13T12:50:25.982-11:00Imagine! The trustees stating, before any request ...Imagine! The trustees stating, before any request is made, that it just will not happen! That would be relative to the NHL being pompous enough to state, "Here is our offer. Accept it or we'll lock you out."... Oh, wait a minute...never mind.

I will state that this time around, most of the fans I have spoken with, no matter the team they affiliate themselves with, are apathetic. The NHL and the NHLPA are doing more damage than they may realize.

Bettman, without hesitation, locked-out the players, based on the fact that, after the last lock-out, the fans came scurrying back, paying homage to the man with the omni-ego accompanied by what resembles 'little man syndrome'. His objective, to re-crush the NHLPA.

If,as you, J.T., addressed in a recent blog, the fans do not take back the game, send some sort of meaningful message, this will recur.

Having said all of that, I believe that any challenge to the ownership or availability of claim to the Stanley Cup would basically be scoffed at by Bettman and his group of cronies, as they would tie it up in court until the lock-out is done. Apparently these people have more money than brains, so when threatened, they will retaliate.

As has been witnessed on various occasions, Bettman has no shame. Anyone who thinks he will acquiesce to a challenge of this sort is dreaming in technicolour. Pisanonoreply@blogger.com
