Yes we should try and shine the spotlight away from the glamour sports as much as feasible.

It may be politically incorrect to say but a Gold Medal in Womens hockey IMHO does not carry as much weight as the same prize for men. A big part of the reason is that its a sure gold or silver every time, hardly arduous competition. However if we do not win the Gold in Mens hockey, we can still have a very successful Olympics.

Frankly I am not in favour of spending huge sums of public money and allowing politicians to worm there way into the picture as Lisa Raitt felt entitled to do at the presser.

Own the podium IMHO is not a Canadian sentiment. Rent with authority is better. Olympics are mostly sudden death outcomes, its by no means the last word on our athletic nature. Who knows the medals in many cases could still be won by the best cheaters.Stevehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14162783936999869984noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3435571560723564995.post-55394625114642704202014-01-08T18:18:44.294-11:002014-01-08T18:18:44.294-11:00Excellent read, JT. I follow short track, freestyle skiing, snowboarding and speed skating particularly (and more and more curling recently). As a hockey fan I also obviously follow our national passtime, but I do cringe when I hear people say things like hockey gold is the only one that matters.

Canada is blessed now with highly successful and competitive athletes in almost all Olympic events at the Winter Games. In Vancouver Canada won medals in 9 of the 15 events (Turin was 10), which was more than any other country. We have a chance at seeing that expand even more in Sochi with strong alpine, cross country and luge teams. Canadians are spoilt for choice across all sorts of sports at the Winter Olympics, more than any other nation. Over the last 20 years we've proven that we're more than a hockey nation, we're a sports nation. I simply cannot wait.

Go Canada Go! Go World Go!
