My New Sweater

Well, here it is. Ironically, it arrived fifteen years to the day after my Habs hero played his last game wearing it. I thought it over carefully, and I went with Roy because he's the reason I fell in love with the Canadiens in the beginning, and he's the one whose magic helped win the only two Habs' Cups I remember well. Thanks for all the input!

Beauty jersey. i started watching late 80's. some reason i wasnt a Roy fan, I liked Kelly Hrudey. On the Habs it was all about Richer, Desjardins, Courtnall and Corson. what a team

Great Choice.

... eh ... St. Patrick still leaves a bitter taste in the mouth, not because of the trade, but the inelegant way in which he departed.

I'd be inclined to wear a classic #10, #23 ... or maybe something more esoteric like #35 (another of my all-time favs - anyone remember who wore that number?) :)

JT,

I went with the baseball style jersey and went with 26. I already have a 33 jersey, which is still cool. But the warm temps here in Texas make the baseball jersey a more suitable option. Plus, I'm a huge Gorges fan (like you).

@anon: I'm guessing you're of my vintage? In that case, Mike McPhee. I seriously thought of getting his number, but I already have a Pleks #35 sweater in his memory. I'm thinking of doing a "where are they now" feature on the blog. Would you be interested in a McPhee feature?

Appreciated Mike McPhee - a clutch player in big games. Loved the highlights of a couple of one handed shots for goals from the circle while fending off a defender with his free hand. Game 7 against Hartford in 86, a shorty and OT assist. Skrudland's quick OT winner in the Finals against the Flames was all McPhee, all Brian did was keep his stick on the ice.

Nice jersey JT, I had a Roy when I was a kid. I got a Lafleur vintage CCM this summer. It looks really nice, and love pulling it out after big wins. It's nice that it's cold enough here on the West Coast right now that I can wear my Heritage Classic toque ala Theodore.

JT: I preclude your vintage, I'm afraid :( ... nay, I remember the youngin' days of Mr. Robinson - hopefully that provides a sufficient reference. If it came to personallizing a sweater, I suspect my major challenges would be the sheer number of candidate number and names, given I lived (and practically died) with that 70s dynasty team.

From a post-dynasty perspective, there were few players beside McPhee that would make it to my worship pedestal. It's hard to think of many others that could top Mr. Mcphee's uncanny ability to stay one step ahead of the play. With all due respect to Carbo, McPhee *was* Bob Gainey incarnate. Quite possibly the most underrated player in Habs history, Mike was that sweet spot rarity who was a marvelous checking forward, tremendous grinder and, when required, one of the smartest talents in the League who seemingly was always part of the biggest goals.

Interesting to note that McPhee was once considered a fringe talent - barely making the draft in 1980, one of Irving Grudman's final (and best) selections as GM.

So count me in for a #35, or maybe a #26 :) ... but a #33? Sorry, too much water under the bridge, too many words spoken and egos cuddled to ever bring me back into the worshiping fold.
