Hey! A Contest!

Well, I'm not much into self-promotion as you can probably tell by the lack of ads or anything on here, but I had an email today from a site that's running a contest for fans of Canadiens-themed blogs. You get to pick your top nine favourite blogs and they compete against each other for bragging rights. Somehow these guys heard of The H...and added it to the list.

So, if you read a lot of Habs blogs and you'd like to cast your vote, you can do it at:

I don't expect to win the thing...there are too many really good Habs bloggers out there. I read and respect a lot of them, and I think it'd be nice to go and show your support for the ones you like. Most of the bloggers do it for the love of the Habs and don't get anything out of it other than the pleasure you take in their writing. And who knows? You might discover a blog you don't read yet, that could become your new favourite!

I'd be interested to know what your, say, top three or top five habs blogs are. (I'm in some need, as I live over-seas and the only hockey I get is reading about hockey).

Darren, my favourite is Four Habs Fans. It's completely irreverent and profane. But it's also smart and very witty. I have that one bookmarked and read it every day. I also really like A Theory of Ice. The author is very sharp and funny too, but doesn't update all that often. Dennis Kane's often a good read too. Those are the ones I voted for.

Thanks for that, JT. You're a good read too.

I guess J.T. one weakness your blog has, compared to some of the other candidatures, is the layout. No offence but the default look of blogger is kind of ugly and much could be done to make your blog more original and fun to visit. Some of my suggestions:

* change your blog name from The H... (too long) to Habs loyalist (like your blogger site id. Simpler and Easier to remember. Most people I know refer to your blog as J.T.'s blog, The H or Habsloyalist.

*register the habsloyalist.com (or .ca, .org, .whatever) domain (cheap, around 10$ per year with blogger's own domain registrar) you'll get a better google ranking and look more professional.

*Use a blogger theme (no need to code HTML, just pick something off a design site and adapt it to your site).

*add blogger features (like fans, tag clouds, a blog roll (for your favourite habs sites).

*Create yourself a banner and make yourself a logo and get yourself a better picture (either a real somber one or a simple image).

If you want go see my site for some ideas of what you can do with a blogger site it's unsiteoriginal.com. Even if do not update it often I have a really regular traffic coming from search engines and referrals.

Anyway, if you have questions or are in need of help email me (my email is on my site). I might not be able to help you immediately (university exams) but I'm willing to help you out as much as I can.

@Dennis: Thanks to you too! I like your stuff. And, no offence to anyone else in the blogosphere intended. I like a lot of blogs, and, as I said, there are a lot of really good people out there. The ones I mentioned are just the ones I manage to make time to visit most often.

@Raphael: Thanks for the tips. I'll look into fixing the old place up a bit, but I'm not very computer-savvy at all. I appreciate your offer of help, though!

J.T. - I read your blog because of the excellent writing. The format doesn't really matter much to me, but if you want to dress it up a bit go ahead. Just be careful not to slow down the load time. I find that some other blogs, like Allhabs and Eye on the Prize, with fancier formats are consistently slow (5 seconds) to load probably from inefficient coding.

Anyway keep up the good work.

If I had the patience to vote I'd vote for you, JT. Hard to catch up on real stuff, ignore 4 kids AND sign up for something that I actually have to read. But if I could multislack any better than I already do, I'd put my vote in for you.
